Flare-ups occur when drippings such as fat, grease, or juices from meat fall onto the heating element or source, causing sudden high heat and, often, brief flames in some grills and smokers.
Preventing Flare-ups
Flare-ups can harm your MEATER probes. Follow these steps to minimize flare-ups and learn how to manage probes affected by high heat.
- Opt for low and slow cooking over direct heat to reduce flare-up risks.
- When searing meat, we suggest cooking low and slow using indirect heat and removing the probe during a reverse sear.
- Watch this MEATER ProKnow video on YouTube for searing techniques.
- Place a cooking sheet or multiple layers of foil beneath the probe to serve as a protective heat shield.
- Use a drip pan to catch grease and prevent it from reaching the fire, reducing the chance of flare-ups.
