Original MEATER devices sometimes show a dash (-) instead of their ambient temperature.
Explaining the Ambient Dash
The ambient sensor in MEATER Alpha Collection products works as an offset of the internal one, and the ambient temperature only shows when it registers a difference of 9°F/5°C or higher than the internal sensor. Until the ambient reaches that difference, you will see a dash displayed for the ambient sensor.
This does not apply to MEATER Pro probes, because they will always show an ambient reading regardless of how close it is to the internal reading. If your MEATER Pro probe isn't reporting an ambient temperature, Contact Us.
Low & Slow Cooking
The ambient dash can also be seen in low-and-slow cooking, especially when approaching the stall for high-temperature meats like brisket and pork shoulders. When the internal and ambient temperatures get too close to each other, the dash will likely appear. If the ambient temperature does rise above the 9°F/5°C threshold and the dash remains, there may be an issue with the probe. Contact Us so that we can look into it!
Probe Damage
No longer seeing the ambient temperature displayed is also a sign of probe damage. If there are none and the probe is within the warranty period, you may be eligible for a replacement. Contact Us so we can take a look into it and determine what happened to your probe.
